Concept Clarifier - Quartile Ranking Method
One way of measuring a mutual fund’s performance is by comparing with its peers in the category. Quartile rankings are a measure of how well a mutual fund has performed against all other funds in its category. Total funds in a category are divided into 4 groups and ranked in descending order:
- Top Quartile (Q1) – Top 25 per cent Funds of the category
- Upper Middle Quartile (Q2) – Next 25 per cent Funds (25 per cent-50 per cent)
- Lower Middle Quartile (Q3) – Next 25 per cent Funds (50 per cent-75 per cent)
- Lower Quartile (Q4) – Bottom 25 per cent Funds of the category
