His tenure at the UN included pivotal roles such as Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, where he led global communications strategies. Earlier, his humanitarian contributions were significant, notably as Head of the UNHCR office in Singapore during a critical period of refugee crises and in leading peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia.
Upon entering Indian politics, Dr. Tharoor seamlessly transitioned his global expertise to national service. He held the significant portfolio of Union Minister of State for External Affairs (2009-2010), directly contributing to India's foreign policy formulation and representation. Further underscoring his influence in this domain, he has consistently served as a key voice in parliamentary discourse on international relations, including extensive experience as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs.
Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, was appointed by the Indian government to lead one of the all-party parliamentary delegations tasked with briefing key foreign governments on India's stance following Operation Sindoor.
